Myths and Facts about Alcohol Treatment

in Health

Alcoholism is a condition which affects millions of Americans. Only 5% of those afflicted with alcoholism abuse in Florida and elsewhere actually seek Florida alcohol treatment in substance abuse centers. The number of people needing treatment far outweighs the number of people who are treated. Understandably, there is a great deal of misinformation surrounding alcohol treatment programs, so it’s necessary to dispel the myths and highlight the actual facts surrounding alcoholism and Florida alcohol treatment.

Myth: Detoxification equals a cure for alcoholism.

Fact: Detox is a necessary part of rehabilitation. However, it is merely the first in a series of many steps on the road to recovery. Detox addresses the body’s physical addiction to alcohol. However, the stronger pull is actually the psychological addiction to alcohol. This is much more difficult to address; however, it is not impossible. Patients can overcome their psychological addiction to alcohol through group and individual counseling.

Myth: Alcoholics are weak-minded.

Fact: Alcoholism has nothing to do with who a person is. It is a disease, and as with any disease, professional help is needed to overcome it. Alcoholism is a true illness and afflicts people from all walks of life.

Myth: Alcohol treatment programs don’t work.

Fact: There is no cure for alcoholism; however, alcohol treatment programs help recovering addicts gain tools that will help them live the rest of their lives without drinking. Sobriety requires decision-making skills that will maintain sobriety. It is not easy, but it is doable. Countless sober individuals who are actually recovering alcoholics stand as testament that alcohol treatment programs do work and are effective.

Myth: Treatment for alcoholism stops after an individual finishes rehab.

Fact: Finishing the rehab program is just the beginning. When an alcoholic leaves Florida alcohol treatment, he or she will face even more challenges. It is incredibly difficult to stay sober when faced with outside influences, including access to alcohol and external stimuli, such as stress from work, family, or friends. Most individuals are encouraged to enroll in Florida alcohol treatment aftercare programs or a 12-step program, such as Alcoholics Anonymous, in order to maintain a good support system and provide outlet for daily stresses and stimuli which make drinking to cope a temptation.
