Tips To Choose The Best Sunscreen For Your Skin

in Health

Applying sunscreen is one of the most effective ways to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays. However, you might be confused because there are so many different kinds of sunscreen on the market today. The most important thing you need to consider while buying one is knowing about different components that it has. Here are some other useful tips for you to choose the best sunscreen for your skin.

1. Choose a sunscreen with the right SPF number

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. It lets you know how much longer you can stay out of the sun without burning. The SPF number ranges between 2 and 60. However, you should look for a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 or higher for maximum protection and minimal skin damage, but no greater than 50. Studies show that sunscreens with an SPF of 50 only provides 1% to 2% more protection than an SPF 30.

2. Choose a sunscreen based on your skin type

It’s very important for you to match your sunscreen with your skin type while determining which sunscreen is best for you. If you have dry skin, you need to the one with glycerin or aloe that will moisturize and protect your skin from the sun's potentially damaging rays. If you have sensitive skin, you should look for a sunscreen that is both hypoallergenic and fragrance-free. And if you have acne-prone skin, it’s better for you to select a sunscreen that has avobenzone, oxybenzone and the word noncomedogenic on its label.

3. Avoid sunscreen oils

Sunscreen oils will not be a good choice because they typically have an SPF of two or lower. So they offer little or no protection while you are in the sun.

4. Use a broad-spectrum protection sunscreen

A sunscreen that provides broad-spectrum coverage will be good for your skin. It will protect against both UV-A and UV-B rays, which can cause sunburn, skin cancer, signs of premature aging and wrinkles. Therefore, it's important for you to look for bottles that state "UVA/UVB," "broad spectrum" or "broad spectrum UVA/UVB" to protect yourself from both types of UV rays.

5. Look for a sunscreen based on your activities

Water resistant sunscreen or waterproof sunscreen will work well if your activities include water or sweating a lot. However, it’s necessary for you to understand the difference between these two kinds of sunscreens. Water-resistant sunscreen only protects you up to 40 minutes in the water while waterproof sunscreen should provide protection for 80 minutes.
